dates show up as 5 digit number within concatenation

in cell a2 i have the date 1/31/12

    in another cell i have

    concatenate("received on ",a2)
and i am getting the output

"received on 40939" in place of the date.

is there anyway to get this to display the Gregorian date as opposed to the number off of the base date?

    try:

    concatenate("received on ",TEXT(A2,"d/m/yy"))
