Possible to restrict certain users from making changes?

As the title says, I am trying to find a way to restrict certain users from making changes to an Excel spreadsheet.
The document is stored on a shared drive which everyone in the department has access to.
Half of the users need to be able to update the workbook with new information, however the others should have Read Only access.
    Is this possible?

    Thanks so much!

You can set a password for updating and only give it to those users.
    Several options.
    1. Use "Save As" and in the "Save As" window, click on Tools (lower right) > General Options
and set a password to modify.
Drawbacks: Others can still modify the spreadsheet but would have to save it under a different name.

    2. With all the cells locked (default setting), password protect the individual spreadsheets and give that password to the proper individuals
Drawback: All cells will be unlocked, they could accidently change formulas

    3. Select the region(s) that you want certain users to be able to modify. On Review Tab>"Allow Users To Edit Ranges"> New
Enter a password. Repeat for other ranges. Protect the worksheet with a different password. Now when a user tries to enter something into one of those selected ranges, they'll be asked for that first password. Once they enter it (for that range), they can make multiple changes. If they try to enter something outside those ranges, Excel will not let them.
Drawbacks: have to remember multiple passwords. Probably the best option.

    Does that help?
