Row Headers "Go Black" When Clicked

Hello World,

First off, this is not a problem, more of a question.

I have a worksheet that has:
6 columns and 462 rows of data all text

Worksheet does not have:
macros, added VBA, graphics, controls, conditional formats, etc. Strictly text data.

As I am reviewing the data for analysis purposes, I have hidden some rows. When I attempt to adjust the row height (by click-to-drag on the row margin), all row headers below the selected rows "go black" (see attached picture). It is not permanent; moving my mouse over the "blackness" will reveal the headers below and zooming in or out on the information will reveal all headers as well. This blackness only appears when I click on row margins AND if rows are hidden.

My questions are:
Has this happened to anyone else?
Should I be concerned with the integrity of the sheet?

I have tried saving as .xls, .xlsx, and .xlsb but the issue persists throughout.

Any thoughts or links to other instances posted online would be greatly appreciated.
Any jokes about Once you go black... also welcome! :)

2.jpg - Blacked out row headers.

I have tried to simulate what you have shown, and the closest I can come to it is if I set a range of row heights to 1 (or less) then when you click on a cell in that range, the CELL looks black, but not the row indicators.

any chance you could upload the file for us to take a look at? (remove any sensitive info if necessary)
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

Example attached.

If this cannot be duplicated on your end, please let me know.

Thanks for your assistance with this. Like I mentioned, not critical at all for this to be resolved. Just curious as to the hows and the whys.

Hmmm ok that IS wierd lol. and hows this if you have row 46 showing (at the top) when you try to adjust the row height of row 364, you get black. BUT, is you scroll down to that row 300 is "at the top", and then try to adjust the height of 364....no black?????

Re: Row Headers "Go Black" When Clicked

I've actually duplicated this blackness error on a separate sheet. I arbitrarily (word of the day for me) filled in number series in 10 columns, dragged it down for 700 rows or so. After hiding random chunks of "data" the blackness will return when I click to adjust row height on some of the rows, but as you mentioned if a specific row is "at the top" no blackness...

It is quite bizarre. From your perspective, should I be overly concerned (i.e. reinstall excel) or just chalk it up to a fluke?

There has to be a logical explanation for this. I dont believe there is a problem at all, nor do I believe you need to do anything. I have asked some of the other Mods and gurus to take a look as well, so maybe 1 of them has seen this before?

(watch this space lol)

Re: Row Headers "Go Black" When Clicked

Okay, I'm intrigued. I've done this without data now too; try just hiding random chunks of rows. It takes about 4 or 5 chunks before it happens. I even tried in a new file to rule out some strange workbook properties in the OP.

But note that this phenomenon (today's word) does not happen in 2010, I'm dual installed with 2007 where it seems very repeatable.

I can't find any reference in Google-land either. I'm stumped and entertained a bit too.

Cheers!

Thanks for checking into this Kcarley. Since I originally posted I have duplicated this phenomenon on every workbook that I am reviewing that requires any number of chunked rows to be hidden. I will try and take some notes on when this occurs throughout the day (i.e. how many rows are hidden, which rows, and what row the black "starts" at) to assist with this mystery.
