Unhappy Fill Text To Excell 2010

One of if not the most valuable functions of Excell is to enter into a Cell what could be several lines of text, and then close the Cell so that only the first line or first words are visible, for example an address.

Selecting and opening the Cell expands the Cell to reveal all of the contents.

This way, we are able to keep Cells which could all contain varying text lengths, all the same size.

Open the Cell to show all of the contents, close the Cell to show only the first line or words.

Simple, can anyone tell me how to do this please.

    Thank You

Re: Fill Text To Excell 2010

Not sure exactly what you are looking for. I've attached 2 possibles.
In Rows 1-6, I used Excel's Grouping (Outlining) function to group rows 2-3 and 5-6 so they can be opened or closed (click on the +)

In 9 and 10, I simply made the cell height big enough to show a single line, formatted the cell alignment to "Vertical: Top". If you click on the cell you can see the entire text in the Formula box in the toolbar, assuming it's opened wide.

If neither of these is what you are talking about, can you explain a little better? Do you have an example?

    Hi ChemistB
    Thank You for your response.
Looking at Rows 9,10, in your Book 1 Spread Sheet I see what we are seeking to achieve -enter varying ammounts of text into the cell, close the cell so that we only see the first line, open the cell so that we see all of the text.
See our attached Spread Sheet - PartsList.
You will see the address for the Supplier - Gold Wassal.
We are using MS Office 2010.
Why doesn`t our Spread Sheet work to your example, we want to format all of the cells in our Spread Sheet so that they open and close as yours does, Lines 9, 10.
    Ours doesn`t.
    Grateful for all assistance.

Typically, the formula bar only opens up to 3 lines. Maybe there is a way to automate it with programming (VBA). I will ask around. You can adjust the height of the formula bar by grabbing the top of the header bar (i.e. right above "F") and pulling it down until you have what you think will be the maximum number of lines you will need. I did that with the attached example.

I don't think the elongated formula bar will carry over to your computer, you'll need to grab and drag the header yourself when you want to use it. That means it won't carry over between computers either. Hmmm

Red face Re: Fill Text To Excell 2010

    Hi Chemist

Taking your sample Spread Sheet and working on that I was able to resolve the errors I had been making, though obviously, this matter could be resolves overall in software update.

To correctly enter any quantity of Text into a Cell, which when deselected will close, and when selected, will open, without the text breaching the border of the text cell.

    1. It is essential Text is entered into the Text Bar, and not the Cell, so Select the cell, then Select the Text Bar, then write or copy and paste the text into the Text Bar.

    2. It is also essential that the Line Height is sufficient to accept the Text, so Select the Row, or the small half Diamond at the top left of the page to select the total document, hold the pointer over the Row Numbers at the left of the page, Right select, select a Row height of around 18.

Thank You for all assistance and have good day over there in sunny US.
