ODBC-settings stored in xls-file

Hi all,

In my company, we use a lot of Pivot tables displaying data from some sql-databases. Therefore all PC's in our network have a ODBC-connection entry for every database. Recently we moved some databases from one server to another. We adapted the ODBC-settings and expected everything to work fine...

Now it appears that a lot of our Excel sheets stopped functioning after the migration. After some digging, I opened the Excel-sheet (Excel 2003) with Notepad++ (ASCII-editor) and I was surprised when I found the name of our old database server:s Even worse, the whole ODBC-connection string was stored in the Excel-file. I thought that an ODBC connection should make databases and servers transparent for example for Excel?

However I don't want to discuss the architecture of Excel but does somebody know how I can disable this behavior? Or how I can prevent this from happening in the future?

Any help is appreciated!

Grtz

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Where is the ODBC string stored? Do you see it if you look at Edit Links? If so presumably you could just use the 'Change Source' option.

ODBC-settings stored in xls-file

The free Pivot Play PLUS add-in, located at
Debra Dalgleish's website, may help:
http://www.contextures.com/xlPivotPlayPLUS01.html

It allows you to view and edit the Data Source and SQL code
for Pivot Tables and Query Tables that use external data sources.
(It has a handful of other features, too)

Is that something you can work with?
