The best explanation for understanding higher dimensions that I have encountered is the book "Flatland: A romance of many dimensions" written in 1884 by Edwin Abbott. It was written as a social satire (see Wikipedia entry), but offers an interesting image of what higher dimensions represent to "people" who live in a world of lower dimension.
