then with that value as text in A1 try

Select column or range of cells
Data Menu
Text To Columns
Fixed Width - Do not set a width
Next Button
Date
Select YMD date option
Finish

Thats what I thought too when I seen the method posted as a reply to other threads asking similar question. Until then I was using similar formulas to what you posted
