What are the steps to save an excel spreadsheet to the internet so others can view

I have an excel spreadsheet on my C: drive that I want to save on the internet for others to view. When I save it, it always gets saved to my C:drive.

My question: how do I save it so the file name is preceded by http (as other web pages are). Can someone please set out the specific steps I am to take as I am so totally not literate in this area. Someone already asked me if I have a web page - I do not. I also tried saving the file as a PDF but it still gets saved to my C: drive.

I saved it as a "Web page" but only I can view it (my MFP friends cannot connect via the link I sent to their MFP profile page (like a Facebook page).

    Thank you.

    Hi,

You need to read more on web hosting. Saving an excel file alone to a webpage is not enough for your friends to view your excel file. You need to setup your own website then upload the saved excel file to a web page. No matter how hard you try, you will just be able to save your excel webpage to C: unless you paid and rented a web hosting.

Another strategy is to use google docs instead. If you have a google mail, you could upload your excel file in there and then share it online to other people. You don't need to rent a web hosting for them to see your excel file - they just need another google mail account. But if your actual intention is to really display your excel file on a website or web page, you need to follow my first instruction. I suggest you to check http://www.bluehost.com/, they have a very good credibility as a web host provider.

Here is the link for the google doc: https://drive.google.com. You need to be signed in to google mail to be able to access this. This is like creating spreadsheet or excel file online. Instead of saving your work to C:, you are saving it on the internet or online.

Re: What are the steps to save an excel spreadsheet to the internet so others can view

    pls see section below ******

I just set up a gmail account (looks like regular email) and am signed in it.
(and I view gmail in basic HTML because I don't know how to enable activeX ??)
Next, I went to the link you provided above (https://drive.google.com) to install google drive (button: "Install Google Drive")
I pressed "Run" for the "googledrivesync"

Info said after I download google drive, I can save files and access them safely, and collaborate on google docs (this is precisely what I am hoping to do with the spreadsheet).

So I signed into my new gmail account and I pressed the button "How it Works"
Info showed: google drive folder will be created on your computer director (where your other files/folders are listed). Files on your google drive are available on all your devices. Whereever you are, you can access you files at: drive.google.com
Everyone gets 5GB free (but you can always get more).

Next, I pressed the button: Start Sync button
I was then brought to my computer's file director and a new folder appeared called "Google Drive” (which was empty).
I saved the spreadsheet to the Google Drive folder.

Now, I do not know how to set up a link for my MFP friends to see the spreadsheet (as I indicated earlier, I do not have their email addresses. MFP is like facebook where we are "friends" but no email addresses are known.)

I can let my MFP friends know that they have to set up a gmail but does that mean I will need to ask them what their gmail address is? I thought that I could just put the spreadsheet on the internet but I still do not know how to do that.

Sorry, just pathetic at this. Thank you so much for taking time out to reply to my questions - you are awesome !!

    ****
I thought maybe i found the answer but it looks like i need to enter the email addresses of the people i want to see the document. BUMMER. I guess I'll have to pay for space for a website.

If you are looking for a way to collaborate on a MS Excel file with a friend or colleague, take a look at Google Docs. It allows you to upload and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations online without need to have MS Office or Openoffice installed on your PC. After uploading your documents, you can in vite others to work on the uploaded document. This certainly beats emailing whole Excel files back and forth and trying to keep track on the latest revisions.

To begin, you need to get a gmail account if you don’t have one yet. After logging in, click on Documents, then Upload. Once you’ve uploaded your Excel file, click the file to open it. On the right side on the open document will be 3 tabs. Click on the middle one that says Share. Then, simply enter the email addresses of the persons you want to collaborate with and click ‘Invite Collaborators'.

Re: What are the steps to save an excel spreadsheet to the internet so others can view

Your friends certainly need another gmail account to access or collaborate with your excel file. And you can just post the link of the spreadsheet to the MFP and then they will be redirected to google doc/drive. That's the number 1 requirement in google doc, if you want to collaborate, you need to sign it with google account also. If getting or knowing your friend's email is not possible or not part of your strategy to display your excel sheet, then you definitely need to setup your own web hosting and post your excel file.

By the way? Do they also need to edit your excel file or you just want them to see and download it? I have another strategy in mind but first please answer my question. Thanks.

Moderator's Note: Don't quote whole post kabayan it's against the rule, just a little would do. Thanks.

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it so much. I'll try to address (***) your comments. You mentioned:

    1. Your friends certainly need another gmail account to access or collaborate with your excel file. And you can just post the link of the spreadsheet to the MFP and then they will be redirected to google doc/drive. That's the number 1 requirement in google doc, if you want to collaborate, you need to sign it with google account also.
***Since the MFP site is like facebook, getting to know my "friends" email is not possible.

    2. If ... then you definitely need to setup your own web hosting and post your excel file.
***I will check into web hosting.

    3. By the way? Do they also need to edit your excel file or you just want them to see and download it? I have another strategy in mind but first please answer my question.
***They do not need to edit the spreadsheet - it's just for viewing. (I can't wait to hear your other strategy.).

Thank you thank you thank you !!!!

young_padawan: If you are going to use google doc, you don't actually need to know their email address. Like what I have told you, you can just post the link of the excel file to the MFP. Your friends can just click the link and then they will be redirected outside MFP or to the google doc for excel collaboration or for them to view your excel file. And again, to collaborate, they need to create their own gmail account because the link redirected them outside the MFP or on the google doc.

    2. If ... then you definitely need to setup your own web hosting and post your excel file.
***I will check into web hosting.

young_padawan: You can use a free file hosting service (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_hosting_service). I suggest you to try first the http://hotfile.com/
This works like an online file manager. You can upload your excel file in the hotfile and then it will create a link of your excel file that you could share to other people. Once that they click the link of your excel file that you shared, they will be able to download it on their pc, hence, you could now share your excel file to them. They don't need to register, they can immediately and directly download your excel file.

Hi, try a product like Box. it is a shared, secured environment where documents can be stored and exchanged. All then have to do is to set your spread sheet as shareable.
in 2012, it is in the Review TAB, Shareworkbook option.

Hi young_padawan. Thank you for your patience and for all your help. Another person replied and gave me the idea to use the Box product which has turned out to be successful. I was able to save the spreadsheet with a link. I then copied the link for one of my facebook friends (no emails required) and my friend was able to access the spreadsheet. I am so grateful for this Excel Forum - I would never have been able to get anywhere without it and people like you and the other person who helped me. Take care and if I ever do need more help, perhaps we will meet again here. Thank you again
