Paste deletes rows instead of moving them down

I have looked through this forum and found a couple of threads related to my issue, but none provided relief.

Whenever I paste rows from one spreadsheet into the other, it just overwrites the next rows instead of moving them downwards, no matter if I right-click on "insert copied cells", ctrl + v or just paste. There must be something in the default options I can change. Any ideas?

    Thanks a lot!

Re: Paste deletes rows instead of moving them down

Hi Thoughtful, and welcome to the forum.

If you have one instance of Excel open (one excel.exe running in task manager), then when you use CTRL+V or Edit -> Paste, Excel's normal behavior is to overwrite any cells you're pasting into/over without prompting. If you instead use Insert Copied Cells, it should prompt you to shift the rows down or right.

If you have more than one instance of Excel open, though, the 'Insert Copied Cells' option isn't even an option. If you right-click and choose 'Insert...', you can only insert a cell down or right without the contents of the clipboard.

To open all your workbooks in one Excel instance, open Excel first and then open each file from the Open dialog window.

Does that shed any light on the matter?

Thanks for your reply Paul. You are right, usually everything just shifts when you paste something and I have never had problems with the older versions.

But using the newer edition, there is no "Edit" button on top. Unfortunately, your your proposal did not work either.

    Any other ideas? Thanks!
