    Protected sheet

First of all a greeting to everybody, this is my first time on this interesting forum.
Surely this will be a very easy issue for many, but not for me.
Can somebody please tell me why if I protect a part of a woksheet, on the free part it is not possible to apply a different colour to a cell?
Both the icons on the top menu for the font colour or the cell colour appear just grey. Where do I make a mistake ??
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Re: Protected sheet

To protect part of a sheet.

Select all cells in the sheet

    Right click, "properties", "protection".

    Untick the "Locked" box

    OK

Select the area of the sheet you want to protect.

    Right click, "properties", "protection".

    Tick the "Locked" box

    OK

Then apply protection from the menu.
Please disregard anything in the above post. It may well have been edited without my consent, as has been the case with several posts and threads recently.

    Hi,

It may not be possible to accomplish exactly what you intended. When you apply Excel protection, you'll get a list of options. The two that are usually selected are:
    • Select locked cells
    • Select unlocked cells

To permit someone to change the color on the sheet, you have to at least check off the item:
    • Format cells

The limitation with this is it permits all formatting of all cells (that is, it's not limited to just the unlocked cells).

In order to restrict it to unlocked cells, in addition to checking off Format cells, you also need to uncheck the box beside Select locked cells. The result is when you apply the protection, you should have selected the following two:
    • Select unlocked cells
    • Format cells
