Unfortunately, you have to go through the entire list. Selecting a black background for "normal text" will make the pane background black except for for the actual text string backgrounds. They have to be set to black individually. For instance, I chose yellow background for "syntax error text".
Why would you want "lively" editor formats?? It just makes working harder.
