Printing to a Cute pdf printer

    Hi,

Does anyone know how to automate the printing of Excel sheets each with a different name to a Cute pdf printer?

I have a VBA procedure which uses Windows API calls to write to a system ini file (which I understand is a necessary requirement of the Cute software), which loops through all the sheets I need to print, and sends them one by one to a Cute pdf printer. However each time the 'print' instruction is invoked - I say print but of course this is really a file save process, the Save As dialog box pops up asking the user to confirm the save.

What I want to achieve is the file gets saved automatically, with the relevant sheet name with no confimation dialog box.

    Any ideas?

    Usual TIA
    Richard Buttrey

    Hi Rob,

    Thanks for the suggestion.

My main problem is the inability to pass the filename to the dialog box. Googling around this subject the consensus seems to be that these pdf creators are fine when all you want to do is manually invoke a 'print' job, since you usually want to enter a file name rather than accept any sort of default the program might give. However they don't seem to accept inputs from VBA or presumably any other code script.

I can't believe there's not some way or another, (there often is), but many people seem to suggest there isn't.

    Regards

    Gidday,

    That's a bummer...
I have no experience with Cute pdf at all, but would (dare I say it!) you be able to include a Send Keys statement to get around the lack of interaction?

    Mmm, that's a thought Rob.

If the pdf software, (I actually tried another product called pdfCreator which seemed more flexible), contains two or three boxes for variable data or choices, and the filename box isn't the first box that is tabbed to, how would I select it?

I wonder if having written that I've just answered my own question. presumably since the number of tabbed keys is known, Send keys could also send tabbed characters as well?

In the end the user has decided at my suggestion that he's better off saving xls files rather than pdf anyway, since he distributes them to a wider base of recipients, some of whom have said they don't like pdf!

Out of interest though I'll experiment with that. Thanks for the suggestion.

I note you're coming to the UK in April. Is that for a holiday or something more long term?

If you can use pdfcreator you may find some useful information on automation on Ken Puls's site

Thanks Andy, I appreciate your taking the time to have a look.

I'd actually come across that site in my travels and tried the late binding option that Ken suggests, but it didn't seem to help, but of course that may be me. I also came across another site which suggested writing a file name to an ini file with the API, but I couldn't get that to work either.

    Che sera sera!

    Good luck with your experiments

The plan for our stay is the medium to long-ish term. My wife & I are coming over and planning on staying 2 to 3 years, seeing some of the world during weekends etc, hopefully the Olympics and then wandering home to pop out some little ones. Our (well, the world economy's) timing is not ideal but we're on our way. I'll miss the Excel conference by a few days & may well be looking for work when I get off the plane in London. If anyone knows of anything...

    Richard,

Not tried this but there seem to be a download for excel 07 which may be worth looking into

    Hi VBA N,

Thanks for that. It looks interesting. I'll try experimenting with it.

    Cheers...........
