What does the + in '=+IF(...' do in an excel function:what a plus sign

Do you know what a plus sign in front of an if statement means? I have a
spreadsheet that has the following equation in it and it seems to evaluate
the same regardless of whether it's =+IF or =IF ????????

    =+IF(J24-(Q24+M24+L24+R24)>0,J24-(Q24+M24+L24+R24),0)

It doesn't do anything. It is a leftover from the days of Lotus
    123. It is harmless, and doesn't change the operation of the
    formula in any way.

Nothing, it is not necessary, it is a throwback to Lotus, ditch it.
