Thread: cannot group selection in pivot table

I'm missing something - please help.
I've read http://www.contextures.com/xlPivot07.html#Problems and reformatted my dates to see if that is the problem. I still get "cannnot group that selection". I want to group by month and it just isn't happening. Sample attached. Can someone please tell me what is wrong?

The problem isn't with your date formats - it's that you're trying to use the same field for both the row header (which you want to group on), and the data section. Add a column to your pivot table called "item_cnt", populate it with 1 for all rows, and use that for your data. Then you can group on then date field.
