Hi to all of you,
I have a file, name Enigma-1.xls that I attach below.
There are 284 Tables with 10 rows (0,1,2,…9) each, which contains of numbers 1 to 40. I divide the tables into four sections as in sheet 1, sheet2, sheet3, and sheet 4. When I want to convert these tables becoming Table 40 rows x 284 columns (as on sheet 5), I can’t use vlookup function. Then I want to convert again the Table on sheet 5 becoming tables on sheet 6. Can someone help me about this? Besides, can I use Excel for analyzing these tables, in order to be able to put the larger numbers 41,42,43,etc precisely on the correct rows for each tables?

i see a problem in that there are only 256 columns in excel 2003!
you might be better transposing tables first

That's why I divided the 284 columns becoming four sections as you can see on sheet 1, sheet 2, sheet 3, and sheet 4.
On sheet 5, I also divided it into four sections, avoiding of Excel 256 columns limitation.

I want to convert tables on sheet 1,2,3,4 becoming table on sheet 5 (and sheet 6), in order to find its patterns, so I'm able to put the larger numbers 41,42,43,etc precisely on the correct rows for each tables. A friend of my husband gave this brain teaser to him.

Why didn't it work when I used Excel VLOOKUP function as on sheet 5 column C for converting Table 1. Although I've manipulated the rows numbers becoming two digits 00,01,02,...09 as on Table 5 (sheet 1), it didn't work either as on sheet 5 column D.
Does anybody know about it?
sorry mate this is beyond me, but the vlook up is only returning what you ask of it
=VLOOKUP($B5,Sheet1!$B$5:$AF$14,2,FALSE)
its looking for the value of b5 sheet5 in column B b5:b14 of sheet 1 and returning that value. so its looking for 1 and returning it. as you go down past 10 those numbers do not exist in column b5:b14 sheet 1 so you get n/a
how /where are you expecting to get 1 or 0 from

Perhaps rephrase your question (with a completely separate example) in terms of "what I have" -> "what I want". Use an example, use arrows to show where things are going, make notes - but not notes like "this table looks like this table"... so what?

what you want is probably possible but i really dont understand what you are driving at.
i can't even see a reason why you want to do this. has it any practical application or is it just an excercise.?
Charlie, I hope you're wrong and someone can understand what Dini is trying to do.
Dini, why do you think that numbers more than forty SHOULD be in these tables? Can you ask your husband's friend to explain what he wants you to do?
...a weird idea came to my mind. This may look like results of some experiment. But it's impossible to populate the tables with "similar" results if we don't know its conditions and specific characteristics, otherwise it'll be useless

Well…, what can I say?
Actually that friend of my husband gave him:
1).A paper with a table of 350 rows x 284 columns, which each cell contains of a single number from 0 to 9. This table didn’t typed yet into .xls file. It will be like table on sheet 5 of file Enigma-1.xls if it has.
2).A file Enigma.xls like on sheet 1,2,3,4 of file Enigma-1.xls. He has remapped the table 350 rows x 284 columns on that paper with:
Column -> number of table (column 1->Table 1, column 2->Table 2, column 3->Table 3,...,column 284->Table 284).
Cell Entries Index, 0 thru 9 in Column -> 10 Rows per new table (Rows 0,1,2,...9).
Row -> Ascending list of cell entries where the row index exists in the original table whose column corresponds to this translated tables index.
But he remapped the original table for 40 rows only. We were so lazy to type the original table manually to .xls file, so I want to convert it as I did on sheet 5 file Enigma-1.xls, and to re-map again per rows of the original table as on sheet 6 with:
Rows -> number of table (row 1->Table 1, row 2->Table 2, row 3->Table 3,...,row 40->Table 40).

That friend didn’t say where this came from, but we (my husband & me) suspected this was the results of a raffle. Firstly we thought this was random generated, but Tables 1,5,9,13,17 / 41,45,49,53,57 / 21,25,29,33,37 / 61,65,69,73,77 on sheet 1 file Enigma-1. xls made us believe this could have some patterns that could be found to extend the table for the next larger numbers…
