I have used Lookup before but am getting inconsistent results with this formula and am wondering if anyone can see what is going on:
=LOOKUP(A1,{"Cat","Dog","Horse","Cow","Chicken","Pig","Donkey","Elephant","Monkey"},{1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9})abousettaCat 1 Dog 5 Horse 8 Cow 5 Chicken 5 Pig 9 Donkey 7 Elephant 8 Monkey 9

The lookup vector should be sorted alphabetically

Try the following correction to the syntax:
=LOOKUP(A1,{"Cat","Dog","Horse","Cow","Chicken","Pig","Donkey","Elephant","Monkey";1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 })
