I like to use brackets and red fonts for negative numbers. When I use either of these custom formats, the decimals don't align.

Try it with spaces either side of the format string for positive numbers. I can't really show it here, but it will be two or three spaces before the first # (to counteract the (- of a negative number) and a space before the ; to counteract the close bracket. You might need to play about with the number of spaces to get it looking right.

The best alignment seems to be two spaces before the semi-colon on the positive side and one space before the minus sign on the negative side.

Well, glad to help. The number of spaces will depend on the font you are using and the font size, so you do have to experiment a bit each time.
