Searching duplicate fields in a column

Not sure exactly how to phrase what I'm looking for...I'll try to explain.
I want to do something similar to a vlookup, but I think I need a different formula to accomplish it.
I own a delivery company and need to sum totals, here's the scenario, for reference using Excel 2010.

    Route Packages
    1 5
    2 3
    3 6
    4 10
    1 2
    3 7
    6 15
    1 3

So, I want to search the "Route" row for route 1 and see how many packages route 1 delivered. In the package row next to the route column are the package totals. So, in the case Route 1 delivered 5, 2, and 3 packages for a total of 10. I want to be able to search for just route 1 and have it return the number of packages. At a loss on how to accomplish that, thanks for any help.
