Angry cannot do scatter plots in Windows 8

A colleague is running EXCEL 2010 on Windows 8.
I tried to help her do a scatter plot and get the equation of linear regression.
    Problem 1.
An empty plot is shown (i.e. X and Y axis were drawn but no data points are displayed) after I select the data and click scatter plot icon.
    Problem 2.
Switch Row/Column icon is grayed out.
    Problem 3.
Chart Layouts 3 cannot draw the linear regression line (because no data points are diplayed on the graph???)

Anyone has a similar problem or is there a workaround ?? Any help is appreciated. Thank you

I'm not aware of any such limitation.

If you upload the workbook no doubt we can identify the problem.

Not sure how an uploaded workbook would help, as I posted my question through my laptop and I can do the scatter plot using my EXCEL 2010 (on my Win 7). But here is the workbook. Or would you suggest that I ask my colleague to have her workbook uploaded to the forum? Please advise. Thank you.

It's just a guess, so take it for what it is worth. My first thought is that, for some unkown reason, when you created the chart, Excel did not acknowledge the selected data -- so Excel created an "empty" scatter plot. My first suggestion would be to go into the "select data" dialog (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...980.aspx?CTT=1) and see what Excel has assigned as the source data range for the chart and/or for each data series (if any). You may get in this dialog and find nothing for source data, which would explain what you are seeing. In this case, you can use this dialog to specify the source data, add data series, edit any existing data series, and so on to get the chart to plot the data you want.

    Fantastic suggestion, Mr.Shorty !!!
For some odd reason, scatter plot chart data range IS empty. But for all other plots, the chart data range window displays the correct range from the selection. Does this mean the EXCEL 2010 my colleague uses contains a bug for its scatter plot ??? (and yes, after manually putting in the data range, scatter plot was able to display the data and the equation)

We could probably argue long and hard over whether the 2007+ charting engine is full of "bugs" or "features that we don't like" and never come to a solid conclusion or consensus. I have not heard of a "bug" like you describe, though I have seen many cases where Excel failed to correctly interpret what I initially intended for a chart data source.

I think a better use of your and your coworker's time will be to become more familiar with the select data dialog so you can correct Excel's default mistakes after the chart is created. It might be somewhat of a nuisance, but it is really not overly difficult and it seems fairly reliable.

If you decide you want to explore this as bug, provide a sample worksheet (possible created on your coworker's machine) with detailed instructions/description of what you did to create the chart, what you expected Excel to do, what Excel did do, so that someone here running the same set-up can recreate your steps exactly and see if the "bug" is reproducible.

That may well be so but you didn't mention that in your OP. That's why I suggested uploading the workbook so that it could be checked with my Windows 8.1 on 2010
