I need to import a list of email addresses into an Outlook contact file. I have saved an excel file that contains the 'named' list of columns. When i import to Outlook, the Excel translator cannot find the "named" list.

You would need to save your Excel file as a Comma Separated Values (CSV) file.

Tried that also...saved the file as a CSV file; the browse file option did not allow me to select files other than *.xls files...many thanks...

A blank file is attached with all the possible headings you need in a contact record.
