Exclamation Newly built 4 months old computer w/ hopefully solvable Random Hangs

    Computer specs

    Gigabyte 990FX UD3
    EVGA GTX 970
    AMD FX-9590
    ASUS VG248QE monitor
Samsung 850 pro series MZ SSD
    Raidmax RX-850 power supply
CORSAIR vengeance pro 16gb 1866 ram
    CORSAIR H100i GTX hydro watercooler
    TOSHIBA 3TB HD
    Windows 8.1

For three months the computer ran great never any issues until around the 3-4 months. Then it began overheating but it was because I didn't have enough cooling on the CPU so I bought the H100i GTX Hydro and now it cools about 10cel better and doesn't overheat anymore. I have ran a dism.exe and I have gone through the msconfig startup options to limit the startup services launched. The only other suggestion there was online was to reinstall or repair windows. I can't find any option to repair windows 8.1 and I don't want to reinstall windows unless I have to. And I have reinstalled GPU and some other drivers as well. Any other ideas?

It may be possible that the overheating issue damaged some components before you added the extra cooling.

. I had from new a very compactly built ACER Computer ( They did a “mini” size series a few years back) . It started and kept hanging after a few months. Sometimes turning it off for a while helped. It was repaired and the operating system recovered several times at the Dealers. It started hanging again. I took the covers off put the machine ( now dangerously “open” ) on a shelf out of harm’s way, and left a big fan heater running next to it. It has been left on running now for 2 years without problem. .
. Inspired by this, I cut out a big hole in the part of the Table I often put my Notebooks on, and put a metal Mesh in the hole. ( So the Notebook is well exposed underneath to fresh air ). If I am away, or at someone else’s Desk / Table / Bench ( or on a Table my Wife does not want me to cut a hole in !! ) I always hang my notebook over the edge - so the side that seems to get the most hot is “hanging” in the air. I think that improves the Life expectancy of my NoteBook ( One did fall off the edge of the table once, - but it only bent an OSB Stick connector, ( and it still worked –( The OSB stick and the Notebook ) ) )

    Food for thought, Alan.

Slightly off-topic (but it is the water cooloer), my wife has a desktp PC that, every now and then, will just reboot a few (sometimes a dozen of more) times a day. You can hear a fan winding up big time (power supply, i think), then boom, it reboots. It will repeat this 5 mins later, or an hour later, or tomorrow or next week.

Changed the PS for a bigger 1, and it seemed to stop for a while - then it started rebooting again a few days ago. I think I will take your suggestion about opening the sides and putting a fan directly onto it, see if that helps

.. that is exactly what I noticed. I mentioned that to the dealers the first time it went in to repair. - They did not respond... Did not want to lose business I guess..
... might be on to something with this "unusual solution" .... I remember way back then the problem with computer speed ( explained to me by my mates in the computer department, was an over heating processor ) ( I was a Physicer - - After a few Beers one night I helped him cool down his processor with liquid Nitrogen... The idea never seemed to take off -, ( The building Superintendent caught us and we got reprimanded. )

    Alan

P.s. – off off topic.. you could have waited before deleting those 2 posts on that unanswered Thread just now.. I may get beaten to a solution again – Never - mind, i will submit my solution anyway. - I will try a novel “Array of Arrays solution... I never tried that before in such a Thread... )

I've got one of those plastic lap-top stands from IKEA and I've had no problems with heating.

I have a new CPU sent by warranty and it didn't fix the issue of the random hang. I uninstalled several services and the frequency of the issue has diminished dramatically however still exists occasionally. I have no other idea what to do other than a fresh reinstall of the operating system.

    Hi Jack,

If it's hanging in Office, repairing your Office may fix it

Unsure how to confirm. I don't want to install everything over again but I will eventually if it comes to that.

    did you check the memory?
    mdsched

    or

Start Button>Control Panel>Power Options>All Control Panel Items>System Settings>Change Settings Currently Unavailable>Shutdown Settings. Unclick ‘turn on fast startup’.

    or

Start Button>Control Panel>Programs>Programs and Features>Turn Windows Features On or Off. Unclick ‘Hyper-V.
    or

Go to Control Panel – System & Security – Admin Tools – Schedule Tasks – Task Schedule Lilbrary – double click a program file – toggle through the options to do what you need to do. First, though go to the bottom and Configure it to 8.1 and say OK. Then go to Task Status and find the edit button to edit the time.

Memory ran fine, didn't have the option for turn on fast startup or turn off hyper v and I'm not sure what the last suggestion was for.
