    Power Query Won't Update

    Hi Everyone,

    I created a Power Query on my computer that I want to run and use on another computer. The computer I'm trying to use my Power Query on is an older version of Power Query, it is Excel 2016. Since Excel 2016 already comes with Power Query I'm unable to update to a newer version. Every time I try to install a newer version the wizard informs me that Excel 2016 already has Power Query and then the wizard closes.

    I thought I would be able to simply replace the default Power Query with a newer version but I can't.

    This is a huge headache and I cant find a solution anywhere. I can't even uninstall the add-in since I'm using Excel 2016 and it's not an add-in and it's a default tool.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you,

    - Justin

    Hi,

    Are you getting an error message when you try to run the query on the other computer?

    Yes. I'm getting a compatibility warning that is stating that the author of the query used a newer version of power query.

    The only way to update Get and Transform is by updating Office, so far as I am aware. However PQ is alleged to be compatible across versions. Which Office version did you create the query in?

    I can only suggest you update Office on the other machine then. However if the two machines are on different release strategies, that may not have any effect.

    May I ask how that link is in any way related to this question?

    Yes, I'm sorry I don't see the relevance of the link either.

    @xlnitwit

    I have spent half of my day trying to resolve this issue and it seems to be a huge flaw in the ability up update power query if you are using Microsoft Office Pro Plus oppose to Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus. In 365 you can simply go to File>Account>Update Options since it is a Click To Run. Pro Plus (not 365) is an MSI base and does not offer this option. It's crazy that this has caused me so much headache but I have decided to uninstall Pro Plus and install 365 to fix the issue. Very sad but thank you for your help!

    Re: Power Query Won't Update

    Indeed a 365 subscription offers more options for update speeds. On the fastest fork, you will likely be some way ahead of an msi installation, but even 365 subscription versions can be on separate update schedules.
