selecting a specific cell based on value of cell A1

I am creating a schedule for clients,

When the client gives me a date they wish to return I enter it in A1 and select a command button.

The macro will take the value from A1, compare to all the values in column D until it finds a match.

When I use a date, the reference value cant be found.

if I place the word cat in A1 and then in D540 the cell in D540 is selected.

Why woud it not work for dates?
