Formula for adding and subtracting hours/minutes

    Hi,

I have tried to figure it out myself, tried Google and failed! Everything on Google only explains how to get the difference between TIME rather than HOURS.

I need a formula for example, I would need to work out the hours left from accumulative hours minus the hours used:

    Accumulative hours: 05:40 (5 hours 40 minutes)
    Hours Used: 01:25 (1 hour 25 minutes)
Hours Left: 04:15 (the answer would be 4 hours 15 minutes)

Easy, but - sometimes the accumulative hours starts with a minus amount, so it gets harder to work out manually, for example:

    Accumulative hours: -07:37
    Hours Used: 10:42
Hours Left: (what is the answer?!)

basically need a formula that allows me to add and subtract hours and minutes whether they are - or +

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You say that the Cumulative hours sometimes starts with a -.
Since you can't enter a negative time are you saying that what you have is simply a text string '-07:37. i.e not a proper Time number. Check it with =ISNUMBER(A1)

What is the answer to your own question.

Perhaps with Cumulative Hours in A2, and Used in B2
