How to get rid of $ signs in cells?

Can anyone help? I have got a spreadsheet with information I have imported from the web. I want to do a simple sum of =g/e but because the imported information is in dollar form when I put the formula in it will not let me do the sum. If, however, I change every individual cell to numbers manually then I can do the sum. Is there any way i can change the cells to numbers any other way than doing each one individually?
BTW I have tried selecting the whole column and formatting cells to numbers but to no avail.

Forgot to add this to show you what I mean.

    Hi,

If I understand right - you want to get rid of the $ signs? If this is the case, simply do Edit > Replace...

In the 'Find What' field type $, then leave the 'Replace with' field blank. Click 'Replace All' and that should sort it out.

As I couldn't open your file I guess you can try the following :
    1. Remove the "$" sign
    selct your range
    Ctrl H
    replace what : $
    with:
    OK

    2. Make numbers from text

Input 1 in a cell somewhere
    Select that cell
    Ctrl-C
Select what you want to convert
    Right-click
    Paste Special - Multiply -OK

Thank you for the advice. That is a much quicker way of getting rid of all the symbols.

I don't understand what has happened. I managed to delete all the $ signs earlier on but now i can't. All i get is a pop up box saying Excel can't find any data to replace. Don't know why. Any ideas?

Are the cells formatted as "currency"? If so, change to Number.

Tried that originally. I had managed to find and replace the $ sign a couple of hours ago but now when I try and do it it won't let me.
