formulas not calculating, on a Mac

I've tried several formulas, entering them in a cell in an unused column, then hitting the return key. Nothing happens. I sent the file to my brother; after some fiddling, he got it to calculate on his PC. I've downloaded all the updates and unlocked the cells in the Format menu. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

What do you mean by nothing happens? The formula remains with a result showing?

If so, go to Edit|Replace and enter an = sign in both field. Click Replace All...

    Does that work?

By nothing happens, I mean that the formula stays in the cell, with no result. I enter the formula [let's say, "=LEN(D982)" - minus the quotes - then hit the return key. The formula stays in the cell with no result and the cursor drops to the next cell below.

I should say, the first thing I want to do, is find all cells in column D that exceed 300 characters.

Did you try the edit|Replace suggestion?

Hey it worked! Thanks! Now, do I have to do that every time? And, what is the formula to find all cells in Column D over 300 characters, or at least to count characters in all cells in Column D?

Well, this means that your sheet was preformatted as text. The best way is to start a new sheet so that all the default formats are set...

.. or select each column 1 at a time and go to Data|Text to Columns and click Finish.

And, what is the formula to find all cells in Column D over 300 characters, or at least to count characters in all cells in Column D?
The formula to count characters in a cell is =Len(A1) where A1 is the cell to count. To find if the cell is over 300 chars, then try =IF(Len(A1)>300,"Over 300","") copied down.

Somehow I'm not copying down correctly, all the results are "Over 300".

Check that you have automatic calculation on.

Go to Tools|Options and go to Calculation tab... Automatic should be selected.

Also make sure that you are referencing the correct cells in your formula.

    See if links help

The top toolbar should be the worksheet menu bar with file, edit ect. On there is one named Tools.

This is crazy.... There is no such animal in my menu bar. I have something in Preferences called calculation, which is set to automatic.
