Install Excel 2003 and Excel 2010 on Windows 7 OS 64 bit

I'm currently using Windows XP and Excel 2003 on an older pc. I have created extensive Excel 2003 VBA addins. I want to move to Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OS and Excel 2010 32 bit.

I've built a new pc and installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and MS Office Home and Business 2010, 32 bit. After investigating the differences between XP/Excel 2003 and Windows 7/Excel 2010, I've determined it will take longer than I hoped to convert my Excel 2003 customizations to Excel 2010. In the meantime, I'd like to use my Windows 7 pc for my day to day work.

Can I install/use Excel 2003 on my Windows 7 Pro 64 bit pc which already has Excel 2010 32 bit installed? I will have both Excel 2003 and Excel 2010 installed, with the 2010 version installed first.

If yes, then I can use the Excel 2003 on my Windows 7 pc to continue with my current work. As I have free time, I'll work on converting my Excel 2003 customizations to Excel 2010. When I complete my Excel 2003 -> Excel 2010 conversion, then I'll switch my work over to Excel 2010 and not use Excel 2003.

This would allow me to take advantage of my much faster Windows 7 pc for my ongoing work while I'm converting my excel 2003 customizations to excel 2010 in the background.

    thanks in advance.

The tough answer is 'yes' and 'no'. No you can't install Office 2010 and another Office version... but there is a workaround. Since you have Win 7 Pro, then you can download Windows XP mode. Here are the details from MS.

Thanks for the response. The XP mode may be a possible solution. After reviewing the link, I think the complexity indicates more problems will arise with this solution. I'd like to keep my solution as simple as possible to try limit the additional issues.

    According to the post at:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2003-excel/excel-2003-and-excel-2010/74bbc47f-90e9-43a4-82bf-917bb8f144c0

Excel 2003 and 2010 may be installed on the same pc, but they claim the versions must be installed in chronological order, i.e. Excel 2003 installed/updated first, then Excel 2010 installed/updated.

I already have Excel 2010 installed. I'm trying to determine if I can install 2003 on top of it.

    thanks.

    you cannot

    2003 first then 2010.

Chip Pearson is one of the most knowledgeable people on Excel and so I don't dispute what he says. I should have asked if you intended on installing a 32 or 64-bit version of office 2010. I just assumed that since you were describing a 64-bit OS that you intended on installing 64-bit office.

    Good luck.

You might be able to install 2003 after 2010 as long as you then run a repair install of 2010. I would recommend removing 2010 and installing 2003 first though.
    Good luck.

    Update.

    I performed the following steps:

    - Uninstalled 2010 Office Home and Business on my new pc.

    - Installed 2003 Office Student Excel on my new pc.
Use the MS OS update option several times to ensure I have all the Excel 2003 updates.

    - Installed the 2010 Office Home and Business on my new pc.
Use the MS OS update option several times to ensure I have all the Excel 2010 updates.

    - Copy my 2003 Excel files and addins from my old pc to my new Windows 7 pc.

    - Run my 2003 Excel files with Excel 2003 on my new pc.
Update Excel 2003 to allow macros.
Update Excel 2003 to load my addins.

My Excel 2003 files appear to work with Excel 2003 on my new Windows 7 pc. I need to perform additional testing to ensure all the functionality works.

Excel 2010 appears to work on my new pc also. I'll migrate my Excel 2003 files to Excel 2010 as I have time.

This confirms you can install Excel 2003 then Excel 2010 on a Windows 7 system, and the Excel 2003 and 2010 systems will work.

    Thanks for the assistance.
