Make permantent changes to Word "options" settings

I am using Word 2010. There are lot sof Options you can change in Word (FILE\OPTIONS). Under "Advanced", in the "SHOW DOCUMENT CONTENT" section there is a setting that determines how "Field Shading" is displayed. The default is "When Selected" but I want to change this permanently to be "Always". I use a lot of cross references in my documents, and want to be able to easily see when I have done this without selecting the text. I cannot figure out how to make these changes the default for all new documents. Even when I set it up for the current document, it sets itself back the next time I open the same document.

Can anyone help me understand how to make this change permanent?

    Matt

    Hi Matt,

The Field shading options are global, so should apply to all documents once set.

Thanks for your reply. Mine definitely don't. Do you know what could be wrong?

There may be a problem with one of Word's registry settings. Close Word and, from the Windows|Start command line, input the following two commands:
    winword.exe /unregserver
    winword.exe /regserver
Then re-start Word and update the field display setting.
