Formulas Not Working in Excel 2003

I have tried all methods listed on this group (i.e. F9, Ctl+Alt+F9,
Tools>Options>Calc) and to no avail. The formulas I am trying to use
    are:

    =EXACT(B2,B3)

    and

    =RIGHT(B2,2)

Obviously the first is to check for duplicates, and the second I am
trying to extract the state from a cell that contains "City, State".
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are your formulas showing in the cell all the time? If so, it is possible that Excel has come to think of them as text strings. If this is the case, CTRL+X to cut the formula out of the formula bar, format the cell as general, then paste the formula back in.

If that is not it, have you tried evaluating the formula, step by step? The fx button on the Formula Toolbar might help.

Another possibility is that you've suddenly changed to R1C1 format, and your cell references are no longer valid. The easiest way to check is to look at your column headings. If they're no longer alphabetical (turned into numbers), you can change it back by unchecking R1C1 reference style in Tools > Options > General Tab.

What about text format in the cells with the formulas, or are you saying
that the formulas don't change if copied down or that they don't change if
you change the contents of the cells involved or that they give an answer
    you think is incorrect?

Text or General do not work. I enter the formula, then try to execute
    it (enter key) and nothing.
