    Posting PNG images

    Dear owner of ExcelForum.com,

It's a well known issue to the members of this forum that many (the majority?) members can not see attached *.png images.

This has been reported many times yet the problem persists.

I even have a "canned reply" regarding this...

Many members are unable to see images in the *.png format.

If you need to post an image post it in the *.jpg format.

Even better than posting images... post a SMALL sample file. That way we can test solutions directly in the file with the relevant data.
Why don't YOU do something about this?

I don't recall seeing reports that members can't see *.jpg images. If that's the case, then why not disallow *.png images and "persuade" people to use the *.jpg format?

    Come on, fix your site!

Re: Posting PNG images- We can now, but wot about only having jpgs. ????

    Hi AlKey
I took another look at the article you linked.
I do not understand the technical side of it too much, but I get the general drift.
Possibly, as the article references Sucuri, then they ( Sucuri ) , if they are still with us will catch anything bad in a png.
Who knows, maybe it was something to do with that virus problem that meant png’s were not always available to us?? I do not really understand enough on the technical side to comment there_...

_...It did come up quite often the question about whether to just have jpg’s and be done with it. I only recently brought back up to mark as Solved a few of the endless Threads or posts where people were complaining about png’s not working in Internet Explorer...
The average / shortened answer for wanting png’s as well was that jpg’s was that .png’s were the “better” “modern-er” and that it was “unprofessional” not to have them supported.

It seemed a major annoyance to some senior members that we did not have .png working ( In Internet explorer ).

The problem seems to have got sorted very quickly over the couple of days recently in the short period when “The Management” popped by. It seems strange that it was not solved much earlier, assuming the fix was not difficult:
But there are probably other issued which caused that delay which I have no idea about. But possibly the security issue you brought up may have been one of them

::.I doubt it, unless you can put a good translation in Hindi of it in front of someone!
That might not be too wise at this stage: - After such a lot of time and asking from people in Threads to get the png up and running, and them finally doing it, .. It would probably really confuse them now to ask for it to be removed and limit Images to jpg. ... Lol...

But always worth putting things forward I guess, in view of the dangers you have referred to.

By the way, conversion to jpg from png is fairly easy.. a couple of ways that I know of:
_ Open the png File in Microsoft Paint, then save as .jpg
_ Use something like Snipping Tool to make a screenshot of a .png and save as .jpg. Resolution may then suffer, but that is usually not a big issue with a screenshot needed to show something in a Forum Post

( I “translated” in Hindi as best I could with a Google translator that other long standing ( Reply window vanishing on..... ) problem you brought up. I posted it as an issue in Hindi http://www.excelforum.com/the-water-...ml#post4585600 )

    Alan

    _..

    P.S.
I often use a “Belt and Braces” approach: I often use the built in Forum facility ( usually with jpg’s ) and then also a link to an image at an external site. An external site can also have its problems of course, volatilability etc, but recently I started using this one, which seems very easy / quick and reliable:
    http://imgur.com/

Of course for any newer OPs reading this : Images are only occasionally useful in a Post, for things other than sample data. For sample data we prefer something we can copy data from.. ( New Ops see here, for example, please: http://www.excelforum.com/developmen...ml#post4532042
