I have ETF gold. It's punished me in the last two years, but I bought specifically as a hedge against Spyders, so I'm not unhappy. I'm not smart enough to time the market, but believe when the inevitable bear arrives, gold will help.

Entia non sunt multiplicanda sine necessitate
In India especially in South side people invest in gold only (next to land investment)

I wouldn't call buying gold an investment. The metal doesn't do anything to increase it's intrinsic value (the main difference with golden hearts). 'Gambling in gold' seems to me a more accurate description.
November was fine: http://www.nasdaq.com/markets/gold.aspx?timeframe=6m
But it looks it's still slightly falling down so I would say not now.
Someone sometime mention value of 1100 but again if I'm a good in such things I would be a rich
It doesn't need to do anything. According to 2nd law of thermodynamics it's a limited resource and it will raise just itself (of course, everything is limited in some scale but let's assume that iron is unlimited).
And yes, it's a gambling because everything lost it's value long time ago and became toy in hands of speculators.
Sir, Is there any financial Cricis in your country..?
Actually, Gold are considered as a good investment when people believes or suppose that companies or economy as a whole is gonna perform bad in the future.
I mean, when any other more favourable investment opportunity is not available, then People tend towards gold.
its a matter of economics and finance and a lot of other factors are also involved.
Investment period :- Long term or short term. Current market or economic conditions.
It would be better if you find an investment planner.
Good luck..!

Hi Tony,
I just searched my portfolio and the only "gold" I found was "Goldman Sachs Group". I'm sure some gold lives somewhere in other managed tools but don't see any directly. Sorry, but I looked.

Few months ago, one of members in our local excel forum asked : "Should I invest in gold or land?"
My advice is giving him a formula: ="Invest in "&CHOOSE(RANDBETWEEN(1,2),"gold","land")
Now he is a famous milionaire and 'd like to say thank to me.
I dont know why?

zbor quotes: It's easy to become millionaire when you have billion to invest.
People (with money) don't necessarily look at gold as an investment but rather as a pretty good shelter for their money during the time of crisis.

I bought what they refer to as physical gold, a couple new $50 gold eagles. Is that what you are referring to?

Not really.
I'm interested in buying gold "bars". I assume they come in 1oz weights.
After thinking about it, it's just about the same as buying stocks except that the "share" price is a bit higher.
Where 1oz ("share") of gold costs ~$1200.
One thing that made a difference for me was that buying the U.S. Coins - when you resell them you don't have an IRS reporting requirement like you do for foreign coins or bullion.
edit: and btw they are an ounce each too, I made money on my purchases and resale.

Obviously - it takes money to make money, or so I've heard
@Quang - That was nice :P
@Tony It all depends in which country are you...As mentioned by other users, In India alot of people invest in Gold as before last 2 years, Gold was on high demand whereas if you do analysis for last 2 years, People stopped investing in gold. Here, the major reason of buying golds are savings for daughter / sister's marriage (Indian Traditions) or for bad time only. No Other reason I see
I would suggest rather than going for investment in Gold, you must go with may be Property or investing in Stock Market.
Thanks,
Anil Dhawan

I wonder why no one ever talks about Platinum - it seems to be much more interesting in its duality??
Isn't Platinum a good investment?
@ Tony Valko
I consider buying physical gold (Bar) is more better than bonds and Gold ornaments .
Investing amount in gold (bar) will gain you 1.5% rate of interest no dought in that in any case .

Hi, investing on gold is something we should think about. Though gold as we know is really valuable, others said there are also its pros and cons. Nowadays some would claim that gold is rapidly changing so we rather be well informed about it before finally considering it as an investment.
Maybe now Tony
