For the last 25 (or so) years I have been bbq'ing completely wrong. Using gas has its perks but I think I would enjoy the process of bbq'ing much more over a real flame (embers). I have a small section in my yard (7 x 4 meters) that I have recently been thinking of redesigning. Part of the redesign will involve a small bbq area within the section. Up until this thread, I had been thinking I might go for something similar to front island in the following picture for my bbq space. However, after seeing yours zbor, I am going to have to rethink my plans. If I could tip your scales for starting this thread I would.

This looks nice but I would do slightly modifications. If you want open space, that's nice. But I would also go with older design, not modern style. And not because of look but practical things.
So I would (and I'm not architect so read this with the distance) put just regular stone and rude wood.
Why? because it's outside and weather will influence it over time and modern look outside always look wasted while older look always look great

Another thing is problem with sun... Most of the people look at this direction because it's elegant, well fit to enviroment and atractive. However, after they start to use it usually put many different colorful parasols that completly ruin it.
So if you will go with this that's OK (espetially for your 30 m^2 where you still need to have some place around) but try to think rightaway of parasol that would fit in.
You won't spend much time there over year. But the time you spent make it for enjoy.
In any way, go for it![]()

@zbor, can you tell me the type of masonry materials you are using? I know that regular blocks are only rated for approximately 3 hours of burn before they start to break down. Obviously you used a treated material that can withstand high temperatures for longer lengths of time.

Thanks martin. LoL, firebricks seem very self explanitory now that I think of it!

If you asking about mine from first post then I used siporex from outside and firebrick inside as in photo:
http://kamin.myphotoalbum.com/view_p...01&id=p6050138
Now, if you using solitary brick outside, or any other material (stone, concrete ... ) you should put firebrick inside. More heat you'll have there, thicker you use.
I must say I experimented with materials and siporex is not something wide used. I knew only for one fireplace with it and I copy ideaBecause I build it on balcony and I needed lighter version. So far so good. With firebrick inside I don't have any distortion outside. I've put 2,5 cm thick... You can put 3 or more... Depending on fire strenght. I don't have strong flame, as you can see it's narrow but I was bounded with space around.. How it will react over time, I don't know... Ask me in 5 yrs
Also I used siporex so I could paint it same as facade.
If I could go on the ground, and not on the balcony, I would go with standard material because I like old fashioned look more (like brick)
Edit: oh, yes, and material to past firebrick together must be heat resistant too... So mine is from same material as brick (that's why it's red).
There are some other things, so if you need more info just ask, although you should ask some building constructor too. I'm just a wiseacre vulgaris.
