Using Index & Match instead og Vlookup

Hi I dont know who has used this combination of functions together but I find it very convenient as it is a bit more forgiving than Vlookup.

    It works as follows

    =INDEX(Sheet1!$A$1:$E$7,MATCH(Sheet2!A3,Sheet1!$A$1:$A$7,0),5)

where Sheet1!$A$1:$E$7 = the array from where the value needs to be returned (copied )
where MATCH(Sheet2!A3,Sheet1!$A$1:$A$7,0) = the identification of the row the value is in
where 5 = the column number the value is in

in other words index(array, row no,column no) where the row number is supplied by the match formula match(lookup value, lookup array, match type)

    Hope this helps[ATTACH]222147
