Hi all,
I have Windows 7 Home Premium on both my home pc and my laptop. As it is now, I have my Homegroup set up to allow me to access files and transfer from either or. I want to do more than just file sharing though on my network. Is it possible for my laptop to access my home pc and use programs on that are on the home pc using remote access? I've had a Microsoft techy remote desktop my home pc so I must be able to do it over my wireless network with my laptop. I used Google to try and get some help but it seems that the most popular pages out there in webworld are those for file sharing, not program using.

I don't have Windows 7 I'm afraid so can't comment but I do use the free version of LogMeIn which allows me to Remote onto my Desktop from my Laptop without being too painful - though it's features are understandably limited.
(obviously it's based on internet connection - as opposed to home network)

You can remote your PC and use programs on that PC over the network! Thats the good news! I'm not sure that you can do it with windows home though, while MS Technical support can, I think the ability to do it yourself is only available in Professional/Ultimate editions.
That being said, it can be done by downloading UltraVNC (http://www.uvnc.com/) and installing this on the two machines! I use this method to access my laptop from my Android phone. This works in the same way as Microsofts Remote Desktop Connection, and can be used over the network or even over the internet if you want!
All applications run on the remote machine, and everything you do is visible on the screen of the remote computer, also due to bandwith restrictions colours are reduced and so is the visual display (this is also true of RDC)!
The other way is to use microsoft live messenger and invite yourself to remote, but this is messy!
Hope it helps

Note I picked Ultra VNC, but searching on Open Source VNC will lead to a variety of similar free options, all which work over a network or internet!
I think i picked Ultra because of the android application to control it!

You could always use Teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com/download/index.aspx) its free and allows you to remote to your PC's Fileshare e.t.c. and you can set it up with a static password so that you can access your PC from anywhere if you know the password - both PC's Need it installed on them - its a useful app and if you have an android phone i think you can download it onto your phone and as normal access the PC from there
Thanks MichaelHughes, I have no problem with file sharing between my pc and my laptop, the problem lies with me wanting to run programs like Visual Studio 2010 without the Visual Studio 2010 being installed on my laptop.

Well with Teamviewer you can remote to where you have it installed and run it as if you were there, which i think would be your best option
or alternatively use a virtual machine and run it on that - but of course you would need to install the virtual machine software
or if you have say magic ISO or a similar application you could package application in question into an ISO and run the iso or just burn it to a ** to run
there is also free remote exec: http://www.vicman.net/getfree/RemoteExec_13822s.html
as far as i know that allows you to run programs on a remote machine, but i dont think as of yet there is a solution for you to run software on your PC from another PC
especially as it would not be in your system and your particular pc would not recognise the application (it wouldnt be in your system32)
- hope that helped.

one of the VNC's will work fine, I use it myself and it works over any network, its free.
The only thing you should be aware of is that even over a fast network it can be slow, due to the amount of information needing to be sent!
Visual studio should be OK, but I would avoid anything graphically intensive like Photoshop or CAD.

Remote connection via Windows connection is not supported in this version of 7 -- need Pro, Enterprise or Ultimate and the selection for the connection needs to be activated (ticked)
I would look at TEAMVIEWER over secure internet connection - and its free
I never install just run the exe file from the source and destination Desktop (FileServer), and run the application – key the ID Number and password and Bingo !
Yet another vote for TeamViewer, it is by far the friendliest of such applications that I have used, and it is free for PERSONAL use.
