All this while, i used a modem to connect to the internet, but it didnt have wireless capabilities. So i bought a NETGEAR router. However, now i am not able to connect this router to the modem and the laptop to get it to work. This router was originally setup at a different location and worked well. So i reset it to the factory settings and tried to set it up at my location. But it doesnt connect. What could have gone wrong?

can you see the router? the modem/line doesn't have to be connected.you should be able to see the ssid in the list of detected wireless connections

The router connects well but it shows me as no internet access. Which means there is a disconnect between the modem and the router.

Not sure what link you have ie two 1) analogue telephone 2) broadband
modem is dial up 56k max normal telephone
router is ASL DSL Broadband and the like etc (always on), separate to phone
So no ideas why your running both
Do you have broadband connection from an ISP?
The wireless router does not work wireless unless configured you will require
SIDD and wireless key and set the routers security ie WEP / WAP etc
So connect the router to the broadband link
Connect the in the box CAT5 network cable to the PC Ethernet
Plug the other end of the CAT5 into the router, this is know as hard wired
Now -- open Windows Explored and use the default IP for Your new router ie possibly 192.168.1.0 or 1.1
I can not be sure the IP but will be pretty much as said
The gateway will open for the router with the GUI for the routers conf screen
Now get configuring will ask password and User (This can be configured and changed as required, remember any changes of cause, if built in FirerWall can get set here
ADMIN admin Admin
Password password or Password1 password1
Now the CD that can with the router needs to be installed - cd runs
The computer will talk to the Router / IP and give the SIDD and KEY, note there down
Then Your be told finished and can test the internet connect ie surf for excel-forums
Assuming the router is wireless you can just disconnect, internet will crash
Detect Your connection, connect and provide the key
Should work .... all these should be in the NetGear instruction and leads cds in the box
I have a broadband modem. I am not running both. I have connected my phone line to the router directly.

Yes. 192.168.1.1 opens up the conf screen and i have entered in all the required numbers. Now -- open Windows Explored and use the default IP for Your new router ie possibly 192.168.1.0 or 1.1

I only doubt this part. I actually didnt carry the cd with me from my previous location and i guess thats the whole problem. Now get configuring will ask password and User (This can be configured and changed as required, remember any changes of cause, if built in FirerWall can get set here

Hello,
I am suggest to you, first check the router support device connection as per the NETGEAR instruction.
and check the issue with connecting a router.
