Table of Contents links

Please Register to Remove these Ads

I have a table including some topics, then I wanna link each topic to a certain page below. For example: this table of contents

Content.............................. Page
-----------------------------------
Introduction........................2
Lessons..............................3
Examples.............................4
----------------------------------

I wanna link topic"Introduction/Lessons/Examples to page 2/3/4 respectively" in Word 2007.

I know a function called Table of Contents, but what I need for my case is that I already have a table of contents and I wanna link each topic in the table to a curtain topic below. Any guidance for my case? Please advise. Thanks

Ice.

Re: Table of Contents links

Hi,

if you don't want to use the built-in table of content, you can highlight any of your own entries and create a reference. Don't know about the 2007 command, but in 2003 it used to be Insert - Reference - Cross-reference ...

Re: Table of Contents links

It works, but there's another issue. In the table of contents, there are 6 topics, I could just be able to link to 3 topics, the rest 3 topics don't show up in the cross-reference. How I add these into the cross-reference? Have you ever faced this situation? Please advise

Re: Table of Contents links

Hi,

your cross reference target needs to be one of these types:
numbered item
heading
bookmark
footnote
endnote
equation
figure
table

You probably want to reference to a heading, but you have not applied a heading style to it. You should work with styles, and use the heading styles for your heading. These will then all be listed in the cross reference dialog box. Most likely, you have manually formatted text of the "Normal" style (or another style) to look like a heading, but it is still normal text with an outline level of "body text", which cannot be referenced. A heading style includes an outline level of 1 or more. This is what is being picked up by the automatic Table of Contents and by the cross reference.
