removing a added .0 after a mergefield from excel sheet

I have a word document where it queries a excel spreadsheet and takes all the fields and merges them into the respective placeholders. The only problem is that for a course id i have, it adds a .0 to it, even though in excel, i have the cell formatted as just text. I've also tried formatting it to a number with no decimal places, but that doesn't work. Any suggestions?
