    default format for numbered lists

When I put a table in a document, oftentimes, I add "footnotes" to the bottom of the table to explain specific entries. When adding the "footnotes," I will type "a.[tab]entry[carriage return]" and that seems to tell Word that I'm creating a numbered list. This is kind of nice, except that I don't like the default formatting Word chooses. Word, by default, adds a left indent (0.25 in) and a tab stop (0.75 in). The format I like is to be left justified with a normal hanging indent at 0.5 in. This is illustrated in the attached file.

My question is: How do I get Word to apply this new style I've defined as the default it uses when automatically creating numbered lists?

You can adapt the formatting style 'footnotetext' to your preferred settings. It will be saved in the normaltemplate.
