I have been sent a copy of an Access database on a CD but I cannot open the files because I do not have Access installed on my computer. Is there a way of converting the Access file into an Excel file?

You can install OpenOffice which comes with a database software that is compatible with MS Access files.

You can open an Access file with Excel. Right-Click on the filename and select Open With... and then select Excel. You will get a series of windows asking to approve the actions. Select OK or Yes or whatever to approve the windows. You will then be given a window with the various tables in the database. You can select one of the tables and then open it. When I do this and I want to use the data in Excel, I will copy the whole table (select the little arrow in the top left corner between A and 1) right-click and copy and then open a blank Excel file and right-click on the little arrow on that tab and then paste Values.
I find when I don't paste values, sometimes the data will link back to the original access database and give me an error (it doesn't change the usability of the data, I just don't like to see that error message).
If you need some screen shots, I may have a Word file sitting around with some in it.
Sorry for the delay in responding to your posting. I have tried the method above when in the database but it does not work as you describe. At what point do I right click on the file name, is it before I open the database or after? Are you able to send the screen shots which might help?
I believe he meant right click on the accdb file (so not open yet), and choose "Open With" from menu

This is correct. I have never tried to open an Access database with Excel when the database is open - I don't think that will work. Also, I have only tried it with .mdb files but it will probably work with .accdb files also.
I have attached a PDF with screen shots that show the process.
Thank you for your posts. Please excuse my ignorance but what is an .accdb file?
It is the newer Access file format.
