Might suggest you get yourself a copy of Access and build the database according to the schema in the PDF then use the query builder to experiment. The Access query builder can build a query using simple drag and drop and then generate the corresponding SQL statements.

There are 10 queries mentioned in that document ranging from simple to rather complex - when you have a specific question about a query then post back.
