Form entry creation in excel that gives next alpha numeric entry automatically

Hi I am trying to create a form to enter data in excel or access
I want to create an alpha numeric reference in one of the form entry fields that will automatically increment by one and autofill when you go to include the next entry.
If the aloha numeric makes it difficult a numeric option would be ideal

Excel would probably be best as that is what we are more familiar with
We want to set up a series of master items each one starting with preferably an Alpha Numeric
The master items will contain static data particular to that item that will be used when creating a job production ticket
The job ticket will look up the alpha numeric and return the information from that row
I would like to use a form to enter the data
