I have been given a handmade combination lock but don't know the combination?
It has 4 wheels with 8 letters.
how do I use excel to work out the combinations available?
I feel sure the code will turn out to be a word?
Cheers

Here's the dilemma for me: is this homework? Are you trying to break into something? Or is this a completely innocent request?
Anyway, that aside, what are the letters on each of the four wheels?

Richard - I think the OP is asking for the combinations themselves, not how many of them there are.
how do I use excel to work out the combinations available?
As the English alphabet only contains 26 different letter I do wonder how these 4 wheels are set up?
Four wheels with 6 unique letters + 2 repetitive or two wheels with 7 unique letters and 1 repetitive and two wheels with 6 unique letters and 2 repetitive one.
Well the heros of Bletchley Park managed to break the enigma a much tougher problem than the OP's but this problem is way above my level of know-how.

What are the letters, are they the same on each wheel, do they sequence the same on each wheel.
Not that it matters too much but do they counter rotate alternatively, there any sequencing order (ie, one forward - 3 back etc.)
One for another rainy day.
torachan.
The question as asked is unclear.
How is 'word' defined? Is this limited to just English words?
And does the OP mean combinations or permutations? I suspect the latter but it's essential to know.
Seems to me that a solution will need a dictionary of words against which to test any of the 4K permutations.
If this happens I'll claim I'm an innocent foreigner mislead by the BBC.Careful Alf. This is the #MeToo age. There were also heroines at BP
