    Lookup Table

I am new to access and I am trying to create a database to do a lookup and populate a column with values. So I have one table with a column of colors, in table 2 i have those same colors with all duplicates removed and in the column next to it, I assigned a numeric value to each color. I want to populate the table1 with the values from table 2 by matching the color values. I googled creating lookups but I think I am going in the wrong direction.

    Hi there.

A picture is worth 1,000 words. An Excel sheet is worth 1,000 non-editable pictures.

Please read the yellow banner about sample worksheets, at the top of the screen. Act on its guidelines and post a SMALL sample sheet complete with an explanation and some expected results.

    Re: Lookup Table

Lookups should only be done in Forms. They should never be done in Tables.

See why smart developers never use lookups in tables.

    Re: Lookup Table

Ok sorry about that. The color code file would be the file I need to pull from, I need the "color_code" value to go to the corresponding field in the SM file. In the SM file I populated the "color_code" that should go in the respective field.

So if I understand the article correctly I need to do this in excel then I can import the excel outcomes into access if needed.

    Re: Lookup Table

Lookups can be done in Access. However they are done in the Access Forms and not directly in Access Tables. See how its done in the following

    https://www.quackit.com/microsoft_ac...ccess_2016.cfm

Unlike Excel, in Access, all data entry and analysis is done through Forms. You should never work directly in Tables. You will need to change your mindset as to how to accumulate and analyze data to a Relational Data Base concept and not a spreadsheet mentality.
