New to Access and I have some Questions

A friend of mine has encouraged me to try Access for some of my gaming developments. I am currently using excel to build an army sheet for a tabletop wargame. Players input their various data into the excel sheet and the model computes some numbers to build applicable values to the game.

My questions-- do I need to code to use Access? Will Access use my excel sheet to build its database? How can I get Access working for me now (and avoid the mental haze of book-learning)?

I've tried to import my excel sheet but I guess I have to build xml mapping/data. I have googled this but I have to code stuff?

Now don't get me wrong, I don't mind coding stuff. But I havn't coded for years and if I do have to code stuff I will have to undertake a vow of coding acceptance.

    Cheers,

PS I have included my excel sheet so that anyone who may be able to help can have a look and see if Access could be made to help.

    Re: Newbie to Access (qestions)

For a starting point, I suggest you read the following link

    http://www.deeptraining.com/litwin/d...aseDesign.aspx

Once you have devoured the above, here is a link to a tutorial on building a database.

    http://www.accessmvp.com/strive4peace/

Pay close attention to data normalization. This will allow you to use your excel sheets either imported or linked if they are normalized. Read the first link and it will explain normalization clearly.

Much of what you do in Access can be done without coding in VBA; however, if you want more than very basics, then you will need to do some coding.

Good luck and post back with any issues you may encounter.
