Create a Full Name field in a Query

I am very new to Access and have run into a problem. I have a table of customer names and addresses. Each name is broken down into 5 separate fields, title, first, middle, last and suffix. I am trying to create list of names using only the first, last and suffix. This will produce a list of names in one string and separate similar names such as Joe Smith, and Joe Smith Jr. My problem is I am unable to create an unique column or field with the data. I have a query built with only the names First, Last and Suffix but I have run into a wall when trying to combine them into a useful list.

    I am using Access 2013.

    Thanks

Re: Create a Full Name field in a Query

    Thank you for your response.

As I am very new to Access, would you mind walking me through the process? I am not sure where to begin, is this a separate query or an addition to the table itself? Can I add it to my existing query (FirstName, LastName, Suffix) and if so how do I add a new column? I have tried to put a new field in my query but have been unsuccessful. I know these are very basic questions but if you haven't done it before it can seem overpowering. Again thanks for your time.

    Hi,

There is no need to create a new field. This is a computed field and you can add this to your existing query. Simply add this to your select statement :

Re: Create a Full Name field in a Query

I did manage to put it into my original table and then add it to my query but your way is probably much cleaner.

I am not sure I understand what "select statement" is or where it goes in the query. So far I have not been able to add anything to the query that did not come from an outside source.

I have it working but I am always ready to learn easier/better ways to accomplish a task.

With your query open in design view. In the upper left corner you will see an icon that looks like a little datasheet. Next to it is a dropdown arrow. Select the arrow. Select SQL. SQL is the language that drives the query. In Access all, queries developed in the QBE are shown in SQL in this window.

Re: Create a Full Name field in a Query

Thank you both for your help and time with this matter.

While I somehow have it working at this time I really don't understand how and don't feel I have wrapped my head around this issue yet. As I am in the early stages of learning if you know of some good resources to increase my understanding of Access, such as an index of the terms or any other basic information, I would be most appreciative.

I will mark this as solved for now.
