Pivot Table issues when refreshing after data has been changed - Please Help!

    Hi there,

I'm new to this forum as i can't seem to find related issued to the problem I am having which is causing me a headache!

In summary I have an excel workbook with one data source which I often have to update or add in new rows or remove rows, I then have a number of sheets in the workbook which contain pivot tables and charts, when I hit refresh the pivot is not pulling through any new data so to force it through I've had to change the data source and add in blank rows in the range to which the pivot then updates.

I've also gone down the root of a table name and dynamic named range etc and nothing seems to work which is frustrating as I use the file daily and it's becoming quite manual which defeats the object.

Help required from you excel experts please

    Thanks
    Emma

If you convert the source data to a Table and then alter the pivots to use the Table name as the source data, you shoudl only have to refresh them after adding new data. Of course, the same is also true of a dynamic named range, so I'm not sure why that didn't work for you.

Then either you missed something or there's something you haven't mentioned. Is the source data linked to an external source (e.g. a database query), or just data entered in Excel?

The data source is on a sheet (tab) in the same workbook that my pivots run off, no external data.

Can you describe exactly the steps you took when using the Table? Are you sure you reset all the pivot tables to use the Table name as the data source?

    Hello Elester,
I think if your Pivot Source is a table then it should refresh.
In this case it appears to be a range/data set. Did you try changing the source data and include new rows!!
    Best Regards/VKS

    Hi Oman

I have tried using a range, dynamic range and I currently am using a table and still the pivot table does not refresh when I make changes to the data source or add rows.

This is happening to me too. I am using external data source and slicers. I just want the users to be able to open the file and see the latest data on the chart without having to click any refresh. There has to be a way to do this. actually if I set everything up to auto refresh and use dynamic pivot table it actually works once or twice, but then stops working, which adds to my frustration on this.

    thanks

To the original poster: did you try hitting "Refresh All" twice in a row (obviously wait for the first click to complete before clicking it again). It could be an issue of when/what order each pivot was created. Refreshing twice many times works. Can't hurt to try.

I just tried hitting Refresh All twice and that made the pivot chart refresh for me. But, isn't there a way to make it do this when i open the file?? Some of my users, just won't click the refresh and then they say my reports don't work. It would be nice to just have it refresh by itself. otherwise why do they even have the refresh on open option, if I have to click refresh all twice anyways?

I am glad it worked for you, however I was responding the issue raised by the original poster - "elester".

If it worked for you, then I suggest that the issue is the way you have your file set up. If you don't want to change that, you could always include a macro that refreshes the data twice when the file is opened.

ok sorry about that. But I thought I was having the exact same problem as the original poster. Don't we want to encourage conversation on these topics, or do we want to see if we can have a million topics all on the same thing? I had seen that this post was update yesterday and was active , and it is the same issue I am having. Why would I start another post on this exact same thing?

    thanks

I don't think it is the same issue-you're using external data (and probably have the query set to refresh in the background which causes the issue you describe). the op is not using external data so it's not the same cause
