Simple line chart with buttons to choose data sets

And I use the word "simple" lightly...

I want to create a chart on a sheet. If I were charting one data set it would be real simple; I could do so by selecting the range of data values which are in a single column with the respective dates in another column and chart it with data on y, dates on x.

Each point was sampled on a day, only one point per day. I have a table for each person, one column has the data point, the other has the date it was sampled on. I would most like to pair each for not every person has a datapoint sampled on each day.

Of course, life can't be that easy. I have ten individuals with that metric (dataset based on the same sampling). I want to add and erase a line on one chart for any and each person by clicking a toggle button for that individual so we can do any comparative thought of.

Just was wondering if anyone could point me to where someone may have already done something similar. No use trying to reinvent the "wheel", and as I am way more new to charting than I am to many other functions of Excel, I can use any and every head start I can find!

You are looking for a dashboard functionality which isn't necessarily very difficult, but you have to start by defining what you are trying to do, specifically.

Re: Simple line chart with buttons to choose data sets

To start as simple as possible let's say we hve two people, **** and Jane (I am "old school"). Bob took ten quizes and Jane took 7. Each quiz haz two items noted, the date and the score. Each person has a table with one column having the dates and the other the score.

Now I wish to bring up a chart and somewhere on that page would have a toggle button for each person to display their scores in a line graph with the score plotted on the "y" axis and the date plotted on the "x" axis. Even though some of the dates that **** took quizes are not the same as those Jane did, when toggled to show I would want the dates and scores to be in proper place (not just 1 through 7 nor 1 through 10).

I suspect someone somewhaere has done this before; I would enjoy the shortcut of looking at how this was handled if possible - I don't want to put anyone through the trouble of working it, at worst I will use the macro recorder and then try to work through all the lines of excess - just thought if there is an example out there it would be a better starting point than the recorder. I hope this make it more clear; I easily make the mistake that though the scenario is in my head it will magically appear similar in anyone else's...
    HAPPY EASTER ALL!

Edit: In my experimenting, due to my newbie status to charting, I am running into an additional problem as to how to handle my "x" axis. My dates are presently in a numerical format where April 1st is 140301 and so on. I need these "dates", and I am completely fine if I need to convert format, to pair up with the scores and that each additional quiz score series to line up with that series' dates, but it seems that though I can add the data series line to the chart, I can not specify that the new series is tied to the "x" axis of dates that those quizes were taken on, I need ****'s scores matched up with ****'s dates and Jane's scores matched up with Jane's dates...

Edit: OK, substitute "Richard" for "****", where "****" once was a common name. Reminds me of an internet filter that once existed and went around changing any word such as "assumption" to "buttocksumption". My, my...

So it would be helpful for you to post a sample dataset the includes the raw data and a chart laid out in a way you want it. Then we can show you how to make it work.

I don't think you have to use VBA but since you are willing that opens plenty of other possibilities.
