Data Input -> Translate to Graph

I couldn't find an exact and simple way to put a title to this...

I have a little project for work that I need to do as part of item management.

Please find the attached file in this posting.

I have explained what I need help with on the file it self since explaining it here without any visuals might be confusing.

In short, I need to create a stacked bar graph showing the different % of items.

I have Item No. which are basically Product Numbers (barcode) and Item Category (say APR for Apparels) and I have Sub-Category (say HAT for Hats), and a description cell which I will type in the information (just text).

So this is kind of like a "stock management"file where once I add (and will continue to add more Item Nos, category and sub-category, and description) a line on the bottom where the data will be kept, I need that information to be showing on the bar graph.

It sounds very confusing but hopefully you could understand when you open the file and view my layout and comments I made.

I would gladly appreciate any help, I really need to get this done ASAP and even wanted to reach out to a excel tutor or commercial services but figured I would try it here first.

    Thank you,

Re: Data Input -> Translate to Graph

    Hi,

    Welcome to the Forum.

The file uploaded by you does not have any numbers in it. By going through the above description, I guess that you are looking for a column + stacked chart (see the attached example). If you are after something else, please post a sample chart drawn in ms-paint or any other picture format for a better understanding of your requirement.

Please post a file with an example of the chart which you are looking for (may be drawn in mspaint)

Re: Data Input -> Translate to Graph

    Hello cbatrody,

First of all, thank you for your reply.

The "Data" that will be used for the Stacked Chart will not have any numbers. I would like the value or the "text" under Item Category to be a count. So if there's 3 APRs and 3 ITTs, I would like the graph to show (using that data) that out of total (6, being 100%) 50% were APRs and 50% were ITTs.

And in more detail (if possible in the same chart), show that inside the 50% region of APR on the graph above, that 33% were UST and 66% were HAT.

So if I were to add an "Item", meaning filling out the Item No., Item Category, Sub Catergory and the Description, the selections from the drop down menu of the value in the Item Category and Item Sub-Category will be used to update the chart. (Item No., and Item Description column values can be ignored as it has nothing to do with the graph. Only the Item Category and Item Sub-Category is being used as an output to create the graph).

What you have uploaded for me to view, is kind of similar but it's different in that in your file, the values (meaning the numbers are inputted as a data) are entered. What I'm trying to achieve is using the "selection from the drop down menu" by user to be counted as a data to show on the graph. Maybe I need to create some hidden cells to do this calculation but I'm not sure how to go about that.

So for example if I have,

    Item Category / Item Sub-Category
    Apparels / Hats
    IT Technology / Cellphones
    Supplies / Pens
    Food / Sodas
    IT Technology / Laptops
    IT Technology / Cellphones

I would like to create a chart that shows the Distribution of the different Item Categories. In this case, a Pie Graph will be more effective so, out of the 7 item categories, 1 Apparel, 1 Supplies, 1 Food and 3 IT Technology.
And again, as stated above, I would like to use the actual "text" or the "non-number value" selection to be used as the data to create this graph (not sure if it's possible?).

So now if I were to add Food / Sodas, I would like to see the graph being updated to show that now there's 2 Food in the Pie Graph.

My main goal with this little project is to be able to show (As more items are added) the distribution of different items that we carry by it's category and sub-categories. It would be much easier I think if I'm working with actual values such as 15 Apples or 27 Hats..

I'm thinking that maybe I should hand-draw it as I attempted to draw on MS Paint and it's worse than my 3 year old nephew's drawing..
