Axis values in filtered area chart

I have an area chart which has about 15 different categories (columns) and about 100 rows. This is used in each of a series of several hundred sheets produced by a macro. Different columns, typically 4 to 7, have values in each sheet although the structure is common.

To avoid confusion, I filter out the categories where there are no values in that particular sheet so that the legend only shows categories where values exist on that sheet.

The filtering seems to throw out the series used for labelling my x-axis.

I've just spent the day trying to find a way of setting the values for that axis with an area chart.
