Apply x,y axis breaks on scatter plot

    Hi Experts,

The problem has dragged me for a week. A few outliers make many of the plotted points clustered in small area on the scatter plot:

How could I break x, y axis to make the chart more presentable (like below image)?

Much appreciated for your help. Data file is attached for reference.

Andy Pope has an example of using a broken axis that you should be able to adapt to a scatter plot (http://www.andypope.info/charts/brokencolumn.htm). There are links at the bottom to other tutorials as well. Tushar Meta's (http://tushar-mehta.com/excel/newsgr...ial/index.html) shows a broken axis on the y axis of a scatter chart, if that makes it easier to adapt to your scatter plot. I would also suggest that you read through Jon Peltier's suggestion of using panel charts instead (http://peltiertech.com/WordPress/bro...n-excel-chart/).

Thanks MrShorty. I have studied those links before but I still don't quite get it unfortunately. Also, any resources or advise on x-axis breaks? Many Thanks.

What exactly don't you understand in those links? Applying a broken axis to the x axis is essentially the same process as you would use for the y axis.

I guess I didn't look close enough at your data the first time, but have you considered simply using logarithmic axes? I know Jon (and many others) are not fond of log plots because many "common" people have trouble reading them. The way you have broken the axes is almost equivalent to each axis on a log scale anyway, it seems to me that the easiest way to get something like what you want is to simply format each axis as log scale. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...141.aspx?CTT=1
